See June 2004 edition of SKY &
TELESCOPE for complete article on Astrophotography with Digital
Cameras. DSLR Focus is discussed by the author as a useful tool for focusing
digital cameras.
How does it work?
DSLR Focus currently supports 2 focus modes.
1. For Canon DSLR Users
2. For any other Digital Camera
For Canon DSLR Users (D60, 10D, Digital Rebel/300D, 20D,350D/Rebel
XT, 20Da)
DSLR Focus takes a series of exposures as fast as
the camera will allow either automatically or at your command. The results are
downloaded from the camera and displayed on the screen instantly.
You then scroll around the image and find a
suitable star to use as your focus star. Place the crosshairs on the star click
the mouse to select it. At this point a focus analysis window will open that
will perform analysis on the selected star. As you adjust the Telescope focus
and take a new image the analysis window quickly shows you if your focus is
getting better or worse.
There are tons more features available like automated
long exposure control for automating the taking of a series of images eg 10 x
5minute images with 20 seconds between each... etc...Requirements
- Canon D60,
10D and EOS300D Digital Rebel, Canon 20D , 350D/Rebel
XT, 20Da
- USB Cable that came with
Camera
- Parallel or Serial cable for
bulb exposures in Capture mode (!! Not needed for focusing
!!)
- Windows 98,Windows Me,Windows 2000,
Windows XP
- Windows Vista and Windows 7 NOT supported
For all other Digital Cameras (eg
Nikon Coolpix, Nikon D100,Nikon D70, Canon G3 etc....)
DSLR Focus works in conjunction with the
remote camera software provided or available for your camera. Eg Canon Remote or
Nikon Capture 3.5 or 4.0. It monitors a user specified folder for new images. As
your remote control software downloads new images from the camera to this
folder. DSLR Focus loads these images automatically
.
Each subsequent image is then analysed
allowing you to tweak your focus till its perfect. DSLR Focus can even control
your Remote Capture software to fire the camera shutter so that you can control
focus from the one application.
Requirements
